VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Chartway FCU said Al Merritt, a mechanical engineering technician with the U.S. Navy for 30 years, retired from its board of directors after 36 years, and a total of 46 years as a volunteer.

Merritt led the board as chairman from 1994 to 1998.
Merritt will continue to serve on several credit union committees in the capacity of active board emeritus. He will maintain his director position on the We Promise Foundation Board of Selection, the credit union’s charitable arm dedicated to making dreams come true for children battling life-threatening illnesses.
Merritt retired from the Department of Defense Navy Civilian program after serving 30 years as a mechanical engineering technician.
