WASHINGTON – The Senate Banking Committee is expected on Wednesday to vote its endorsement of a slate of Bush nominations, including that of NCUA Board candidate Michael Fryzel, which would set up the nomination for a vote by the full Senate.
However, it still is unclear whether the full Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, will vote on Republican candidates such as Fryzel in the waning days of the Bush presidency, with Democratic leaders hoping for a Democratic president to be filling government vacancies next year.
Fryzel, former director of the Illinois Department of Financial Institutions and a protégé of ex-NCUA Chairman Ed Callahan, has been nominated as chairman of the three-member NCUA Board. He would succeed current Chairman JoAnn Johnson, who has been serving as a so-called holdover since her six-year term expired last August.
If Fryzel is confirmed, it would continue a two-to-one Republican majority on the panel – with Rodney Hood also a Republican and Gigi Hyland a Democrat.
