In April, NCUA brought 1,190 staff to the Buena Vista Palace Hotel to focus on improving examiner performance and consistency. Attendees included the agency's entire field team, regional offices, administrative staff, and administrative support.

The numbers released last week show NCUA spent a total of $2.424 million on the event, compared to the $1.8 million originally disclosed to CU Journal. What was left out of that earlier total, NCUA spokesman John Zimmerman said, was per diem of $399,840, travel of $35,700, and a $259,500 down payment to the hotel in 2011.

"We should have reported those costs during our original interview," said Zimmerman, who explained those expenses were not part of the main meeting budget, and as a result, not top of mind. Those expenses fell outside the $1.3 million budget the NCUA approved for the meeting, as those costs were covered in budgets for NCUA's regional offices and central office. The final $2.4 million expense came in below the total of the combined budgets ($2.505 million).

NCUA Executive Director Dave Marquis stated that the expenses were released "to provide full disclosure on the cost of continuing education of NCUA staff and the agency's efforts to provide the most effective training in the least expensive way."
