NCUA Promotes Tax-Prep Collaboration

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Credit Union Administration’s chairman, Dennis Dollar, has asked federal credit unions to consider setting up Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites.

Such sites, established with Internal Revenue Service help, offer free tax preparation services and free electronic filing. The NCUA announced this month that Mr. Dollar had sent a letter to credit unions encouraging them to look into providing the service for members and their families.

Credit unions can offer it in their own offices or elsewhere in the community. Those that decide to do so must contact their regional IRS office in November to receive the necessary free software and arrange for volunteers to be trained in December, Mr. Dollar wrote.

Participation could increase membership and good will as well as yielding continuing-education credits for volunteers who receive training, he wrote.
