ALEXANDRIA, Va.-New NCUA Chairman Deborah Matz has scheduled three town hall-like meetings around the country over the next few weeks to gather input from credit unions on reforms for the corporate credit union.
The first meeting will be held this week in Clayton (St. Louis), Mo; the second at National Harbor, Md., outside of Washington on Sept. 30, and the third in San Diego on Oct. 5.
The meetings come as NCUA is preparing major reforms to the corporate system in light of the failures of U.S. Central FCU and WesCorp FCU and troubles at as many as half-dozen other corporates.
"These town hall meetings will provide an invaluable and important ve nue to have genuine dialogue about a variety of critical issues," Matz in a statement. "The dislocations experienced by the financial markets have had a significant effect on both corporate and natural person credit unions, and it is incumbent on NCUA and the industry to come together in a forward-looking and reasoned manner to find solutions. The ongoing corporate rulemaking is but one element of this process; I am hopeful that, working together, we can turn the broader challenges into a catalyst for changes that will set a course for an even brighter future for the credit union industry."
