Credit Union Day at the Roundhouse was hosted by the CU Association of New Mexico.

New Mexico Rep. Tom Taylor, Minority Floor Leader, talked to the group about pending payday lending legislation before this year's legislature.

Two bills, one introduced by Rep. Patricia Lundstrom and another from Sen. Bernadette Sanchez, await action by the state lawmakers during the 2007 session.

Chris Kerecman of California Credit Union discussed legislation in various states and at the national level.

Dan Weaks, CUANM lobbyist, gave the audience a rundown on legislation of interest to credit unions, including the payday lending issue. He noted the annual CUANM-sponsored candy delivery campaign during the last three sessions has been a success as it has raised awareness about credit unions and credit union issues among lawmakers.

Following the luncheon, the credit union representatives headed to the Roundhouse to make this week's candy deliveries, familiarize themselves with the Capitol and meet lawmakers. The day culminated with an evening reception for credit union representatives and legislators.

"The day was a big success," said CUANM Public Affairs Director Daniel Ulibarri. "Not only did we connect with lawmakers during the event, but many of the credit union people have never been to the Roundhouse during a session and it gave them an idea of the challenges faced by any legislation."
