Mortgage Broker Guilty In $4.6 Million Fraud
MINNEAPOLIS-A local mortgage broker last week was convicted of orchestrating a loan fraud that cost local lenders, including Anoka Hennepin CU, losses of more than $4.6 million.
The broker, 31-year-old John Spencer, generated fraudulent loans which were used to recruit straw purchasers of residential real estate at inflated prices to fool the lenders, according to prosecutors. The transactions generated proceeds that greatly exceeded what the sellers were ready to accept and the excess funds were shared by buyers Spencer, a broker at Minnesota One Mortgage, recruited.
Spencer defrauded Anoka Hennepin CU by borrowing more than $700,000 fraudulently to buy a home in Albertville, a deal that generated a $73,000 kickback for him, and by taking out second mortgages against two investment properties secured by phantom equity.
Sentencing has not been scheduled.
Army Aviation Center FCU Raises $15,000 For Army Relief
DALEVILLE, Ala.-Army Aviation Center FCU donated $15,000, most of it raised at its annual golf tournament at Silver Wings Golf Course at Fort Rucker, for Fort Rucker's Army Emergency Relief Fund.
The fund is the Army's own emergency financial assistance program, which is dedicated to helping active and retired soldiers when there is a vital need. In 2010, Fort Rucker's Army Emergency Relief Fund gave loans and grants to local soldiers totaling $250,495. The $15,000 donation also included a matching grant from Armed Forces Financial Network.
