No Chump Change For 1 CU Member

HERNDON, Va.-One Northwest FCU member took the old saw about a penny saved being a penny earned literally, to the tune of $7,124.

George Shoemaker, pictured at right with his cartload of coins, has been putting away his pennies-and dimes, nickels and quarters-for 20 years and recently hauled it all in to the CU to count it up and deposit it.

It took an astonishing two hours for the coin counter to work its way through all that change-the largest single deposit of coins counted at Northwest FCU, which offers members free access to coin-counting machines. Shoemaker certainly got more than his money's worth out of the free service.

Shoemaker now lives in Albany, Georgia, but he frequently visits family in the Herndon area. He says he plans to use the money for his retirement.
