Opening Festivities Have a SouthernDrawl

NEW YORK - (08/31/04) – Opening day at The RepublicanNational Convention had a decidedly southern taste. Representativesfrom NAFCU and the Alabama CU League cruised the Hudson Riverduring a Sunday tribute to Alabama Rep. Spencer Bachus, chairman ofthe House Financial Services Subcommittee on FinancialInstitutions, then joined other financial services representativesat a dinner honoring Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby, chairman of theSenate Banking Committee. Officials from CUNA and many of the samecredit union group met again later Sunday night at a ‘Saluteto the South’ honoring Georgia Sen. Saxby Chamblis and SouthCarolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, where southern rock band LynyrdSkynyrd was the headline band. Republican convention-goers will behearing lots more southern rock music this week, with the MarshallTucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band and ZZ Top, scheduled toentertain at various receptions.
