Promise From Governor Keeps Taxation At Bay

State taxation does not appear to be a threat this year. Newly elected Gov. Haley Barbour stated at the 2003 league annual meeting that "taxing credit unions is a bad idea and I am against it."

We also formed a state PAC last year and supported a credit union attorney who has been appointed chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. In addition, we supported Sen. Robert Jackson with Quitman Tri-County FCU and NFCDCU. Jackson was also appointed to the Senate Finance Committee. The Lieutenant Governor and House Speaker have also publicly stated they are against any tax increases.
