Provident Credit Union has named James Ernest as its new president and CEO, succeeding Wayne Bunker, who is retiring in February 2017.
Ernest if currently the EVP of the Redwood Shores, Calif.-based credit union.
“Wayne Bunker has done an admirable job of leading the credit union to where it is today,” board chairman said Fred Marcussen in a statement. “He devoted his entire 42-year business career to credit unions, including 35 years at Provident. As CEO, he doubled credit union assets from $1.1 billion in 2002 to $2.2 billion today.”

During his credit union career Bunker also served as chairman of the board of directors of the Credit Union Executives Society, and as a director of FSCC (Shared Branch Network).
Ernest, who first joined Provident CU in 1996, holds a B.A. in economics from San Jose State and an MBA from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. He is also a graduate of the Credit Union Executives Society’s CEO Institute.
