CU Member Wins $10K

EL PASO, Texas-Heather McBride, 25, a physical therapist, was named the $10,000 grand prize winner of the "GECU Savings Challenge 2010: Back in the Black." McBride, who at the beginning of the competition was tackling a new mortgage, student loans, and other debt, came out on top of the year-long competition, which had six participants working to become financially educated.

 

NCUF OKs $294K In Grants

MADISON, Wis.-The National Credit Union Foundation approved 15 new grants for 2011, totaling $294,510. All of the grant projects have a financial education component. Among those receiving funds: Mid-America CU Association Bismarck, N.D. which will provide financial education to participants in the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC); Metro CU, Chelsea, Mass., which will develop one-on-one financial coaching provided by corporate volunteers who will assist low-income households, and the Texas CI League, Farmers Branch, which will implement statewide financial Reality Fairs utilizing social media to enhance student participation, deliver financial education and track the impact social media has on financial literacy.

ICUF Announces Grants

NAPERVILLE, Ill.-The Illinois CU Foundation has awarded $22,100 in Small CU Development (SCUD), Community Service, Marketing and Business Development, and Financial Independence & Revitalization Effort (FIRE) grants, as well as more than $2,700 in scholarships, bringing the total awarded for the year to nearly $129,000.

 

Insurance Plan Created

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala-Federación Nacional de Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito (FENACOAC), Guatemala's national CU association, and its 19 member CUs have launched one of the few private savings guarantee funds for credit unions in the world. Effective Jan. 1, 2011, the fund will guarantee up to $12,500 per person, per institution, significantly above Guatemala's commercial bank, which offers $2,500 per person. The fund will represents 1.5% of the system's now-guaranteed $365.3 million in savings deposits.

 

Bonus Announced

MANISTEE, Mich.-Filer CU is paying a 2% bonus on share dividends and loan interest paid to its members. Approximately $50,000 is being returned.
