I’m reading “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” by Marshall Goldsmith. My interest in Mr. Goldsmith’s book is tied directly to NAFCU’s annual conference where Mr. Goldsmith will be a featured presenter. The theme of the book underscores the innovative approach that credit unions should be taking to adapt to the changing marketplace.
There’s never been a better time for credit unions to apply Mr. Goldsmith’s thought-provoking techniques. His insights prove that “business as usual” is just not good enough today. Importantly, he identifies the critical steps to produce a “new and improved” attitude to enhance effectiveness and produce greater success.

The one book that I plan to read this summer is “Living on the Black” by John Feinstein. It is about two major league baseball pitchers who earned their living by “Living on the Black” so to speak. I am a baseball fan and there is nothing like reading about America’s pastime during the summer months. The one book that I would suggest others read this summer, including me, would be the Bible because without that nothing else really matters.

I’m currently reading “What Hath God Wrought?: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848,” by Daniel Walker Howe. One of the major transformations was in communications, which–coupled with gains in transportation–made it possible for the country to expand rapidly in size during that period.
Speaking of size, the book is about 900 pages. So if you ask me the same question next summer, I’ll probably still be reading this.

I am planning on reading the book “Audition” by Barbara Walters this summer. I am looking forward to reading about her life. As being one of the first women in TV when it was dominated by men, I am interested to read the journey that she took. Plus, she has been married three times and has interviewed so many intriguing people. It is bound to be interesting. One book I would recommend to others is “Blue Ocean Strategy.”

I definitely suggest reading “An Inconvenient Book” by Glenn Beck. But of course if you are going to read this one you should read “An Inconvenient Truth” by Al Gore just so you can drive yourself crazy by the conflicting stories.

I am just finishing up the entire “Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis, because who shouldn’t stay in touch with her inner child? After years of reading all fiction all the time, however, a combination of my mother’s guilt trip and a suggestion from the Orlando Magic’s co-founder Pat Williams during his keynote session at the CUNA CFO Council has finally persuaded me to add some nonfiction to my diet. As a result, I plan to read “Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin and Queen Noor’s autobiography this summer. But I still believe you can learn important things from fiction, too, so I recommend “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini for a glimpse at a culture most of us don’t understand and “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Piccoult, because it forces you to think and rethink aspects of your moral compass.
