RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.-The Richard Myles Johnson (RMJ) Foundation raised nearly $600,000 in 2008, and gave away more than $300,000, including $100,000 for Biz Kid$, a half-hour television program on financial literacy distributed nationwide to elementary and middle school students, and a total of $87,850 in Community Service grants.
The Foundation raised $595,835 through donations from credit unions, chapters, credit union-related organizations, fundraisers and Community Investment Fund (CIF) monies. It provided $120,000 in scholarships to staff and volunteers at smaller CUs.
Among the Community Service Grant recipients was Community Trust Credit Union of East Palo Alto, which received a $20,000 grant for its partnership with the Northern California Urban Development Corporation to deliver its financial literacy software program to area youth. Jones Methodist Church Credit Union received a $2,500 grant to continue its Financial Literacy Boot Camp, a third-year effort to provide a week-long summer day camp focusing on youth financial education.
