Robber Does Damage, Gives Up

A robber dubbed the "backhoe bandit" failed in an attempt to break into an ATM at the headquarters branch of Langley Federal Credit Union here. The robber stole a backhoe from a nearby construction site and drove it down a well-lit side street to the branch, where credit union officials believe the plan was to maneuver the ATM safely into the "claws" of the backhoe, drop it and cause it to break open. But the robber forgot to drop the bucket of the backhoe upon entering the drive-thru, and it struck the steel roof of the facility. It also set off the alarm and a video camera. The robber did manage to get the ATM on its side before fleeing the scene, leaving the backhoe running. Several news crews reported the event the following day.
