Robbers Try Matching Cars Deception

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Two creative would-be robbers used matching cars at a drive-through and a bomb threat to try to pull off a heist at Educators CU here.

According to local news accounts, Kevin Blackburn and Ricardo Perkins allegedly pulled up to the credit union’s drive-through in matching black Buicks, one at the lane closest to the actual building using the through-the wall drawer and one in the lane further from the building using the pneumatic tube. The driver of the car in the lane with the tube put a note in the tube demanding cash and that if police were called before 6:15 p.m., a bomb would be detonated.

The tellers working the drive-through sent money back in the tube, but the car did not leave, instead sending the tube back, ostensibly to get more money. By this time, the tellers noticed the second, identical car and suspected it might be part of the same robbery.

With a license plate number for at least one of the vehicles in hand, the credit union called police, who saw one of the cars speeding away from the CU and gave chase, eventually catching and arresting Blackburn.

But police had already determined that both cars likely were part of the scheme, as both had been stolen and one had originally been silver and was painted black to match its twin, so they continued to search for the other car. When police found it, they said they found Perkins.

Inside one of the cars was a one-gallon plastic jug partially filled with a liquid police said smelled flammable and a yellow rag. Both Blackburn and Perkins were charged with robbery.
