EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Police were baffled when an arrest for Tuesday’s armed robbery at Columbus CU prompted a confession by supervisor yesterday that she stole more than $300,000 cash from the credit union’s vault since June.
The police were looking into a masked woman who dropped a fake bomb on the counter, demanded money, and fled with $11,000 with her three-year-old son waiting in the getaway car. That suspect, Jennefer Gomes, 34, was caught and charged with first-degree robbery.
When the detectives mentioned auditing the credit union, supervisor Crystal Ferreira, 26, overheard -- and confessed to the CEO and detectives that she'd embezzled at least $307,080 since June, according to police.
Both Ferreira and Gomes were arraigned in state court his morning.
