Credit Unions Get A Plug On National Public Radio
CHICAGO-A report aired by National Public Radio on alternatives to payday lending included prominent mention of credit unions. The story, by Cheryl Corley, included an interview with 32-year-old Felisha Wilbourne who shared how borrowing $200 had cost her $275 just two weeks later. The story noted that Wilbourne is now a member of Northside Community Federal Credit Union in Chicago. Ed Jacob, a director with Northside, was featured in the report noting that he had seen some people paying APRs of more than 600%. Northside offers a $500 loan that can be paid back over six months, Jacob said.
Leslie Parish, a researcher for the Center for Responsible Lending, was quoted as saying, "There are some credit union products out there where they lowered the interest rate," Parish says. "They still make the loan due in two short weeks, which causes people to continually take out loans just like they did with the payday lender."
