San Diego County Credit Union on Tuesday said it reached a naming rights partnership with the City of San Diego and Fox Sports College Properties to change the name of what had been known for several years as “Qualcomm Stadium” to “SDCCU Stadium.”
The $8.1 billion credit union said the San Diego City Council voted Tuesday to rename the iconic Mission Valley venue. The stadium opened in 1967 as San Diego Stadium, later was known as Jack Murphy Stadium, then more recently Qualcomm Stadium. The venue will be known as SDCCU Stadium through December 2018.
The stadium is the home of San Diego State University Aztecs football games, and the host of the SDCCU Holiday Bowl in December. San Diego County Credit Union had been the name sponsor of the SDCCU Poinsettia Bowl for 12 years before the bowl game was discontinued after the 2016 version.

In addition to football games, in the next month SDCCU Stadium will host two of the biggest concerts currently on tour: U2 on Sept. 22 and Coldplay on Oct. 8.
“We are ecstatic that the City of San Diego and Fox Sports College Properties have selected SDCCU to be the naming rights partner for SDCCU Stadium,” Teresa Halleck, SDCCU’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “Helping our community thrive is at the heart of SDCCU’s values and the partnership further illustrates our support of the greater San Diego community.
“We look forward to helping to position SDCCU Stadium as a premier venue in San Diego to host all types of events and are excited for all that it will bring to San Diego and surrounding areas, which will include the SDCCU Holiday Bowl this December,” Halleck added.
Duke Little, vice president and general manager of Fox Sports College Properties, said, “We are extremely excited about this agreement. SDCCU is one of the most recognizable brands in San Diego and believes in the importance of being an influential corporate citizen within the communities where they do business.”
The SDCCU Holiday Bowl is slated for Dec. 28, and is just one of many major events planned for SDCCU Stadium. In addition to football and concerts, it will host the Vans Warped Tour, Color Fun Run and the Great Inflatable Race, the Lunar New Year Festival, City of San Diego Recycle Event & San Diego County Lawn Mower Exchange Event and more. Long history of big events
Since 1997, the Stadium has been named Qualcomm Stadium, until the naming rights partnership expired earlier this year. The Stadium was first named San Diego Stadium when it opened in 1967, until it was officially renamed San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium in 1981 in honor of the late San Diego sportswriter who was instrumental in bringing the Chargers football team to San Diego.
San Diego Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium. With a seating capacity of 70,561, San Diego Stadium is located in the heart of Mission Valley. The stadium has hosted three Super Bowl games: Super Bowl XXII in 1988, Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 and Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003. It also hosted the 1978 and 1992 Major League Baseball All-Star Games, the 1996 and 1998 National League Division Series, the 1984 and 1998 National League Championship Series, and the 1984 and 1998 World Series. It is the only stadium ever to host both the Super Bowl and the World Series in the same year (1998).
