Martinez was the first Hispanic soldier from Orange County to die in the war when he was killed by a roadside bomb on Nov. 11 - the U.S. commemoration of Veterans Day.

The 24-year-old soldier was on his third tour of duty in Iraq. Martinez received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Latino CCU Chairman John Herrera will join family members and friends during recent ceremonies in Carrboro to honor the fallen hero.
