LIMA, Peru – Several credit unions have been damaged by the massive earthquake that hit here Wednesday. Luis Jimenez, Peru Program Director for the World Council of Credit Unions, reported at least two branches, including one of San Cristobal de Huamanga CU, suffered extensive damage in the magnitude 8.0 quake. Peru has 163 credit unions serving 606,000 members. Jimenez said efforts by the National Credit Union Association of Peru (FENACREP) to aid in recovery have been hampered by road damage, but the trade group is working to distribute relief supplies, including food and blankets. The World Council has activated its Disaster Relief Fund to provide assistance to credit union staff and members through FENACREP.
