Small CUs, Big Needs

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Helping small credit unions has been occupying much of Holly Herman's time since serving as NCUA chief of staff under JoAnn Johnson.

Since 2006, Herman has run her own consulting business, Total Coaching & Counseling. "I have been helping credit unions, particularly smaller ones, that need assistance on a host of different projects," said Herman, a former credit union CEO at University & State Employees FCU in San Diego and the New York-based Kraft Foods FCU.

Herman said the biggest issue facing small credit unions is resources. "Just having enough time to get everything done. Certainly compliance and regulatory issues are very important and time consuming. And with the economy, it's challenging. Margins are squeezing and expenses continue to go up. And you have to meet your members' needs with more products."
