EVERGREEN PARK, Ill. – South Division CU merged four small area credit unions in 2007, adding three branches and expanding its services into the downtown Chicago area.
The mergers involved Eastern FCU (serving NICOR employees), the VA West Side Medical Center FCU (Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Hospital), the Chicago Sun-Times Employees CU, and, most recently, the Holy Cross Hospital Employees CU. The merging credit unions became part of South Division’s community charter, which opens participation to the community at-large instead of the older charter restrictions that limited participation to specific employer groups.
“These mergers, especially with a modern community charter credit union like ours, are another instance of financial democracy at work in America,” said Geri Burek, president and CEO of South Division CU.
The mergers added three new branches to South Division CU’s community of financial service centers, expanding its operations to seven branches.
