ST. LOUIS-The St. Louis Browns haven't taken to the field here since 1953, but they're being kept alive in part by American Eagle Credit Union, a division of Anheuser-Busch Employees Credit Union.
The team relocated in 1954 and became the Baltimore Orioles; 30 years later the St. Louis Browns Historical Society formed to salute the team that played in St. Louis beginning in 1902 and which shared a ballpark with the St. Louis Cardinals for 50 years.
The historical society's fan club newsletter, "Pop Flies," is edited by Bill Rogers, a long-time technology consultant to credit unions. Some members of the fan club had raised the issue of raising advertising from the banking community. Rogers turned to credit unions for help. Other St. Louis area credit unions are considering support of this piece of St. Louis sports history. According to Rogers, there are thousands of historical societies around, but probably few are supported by credit unions.
Among some of the Browns' historical highlights: a dozen former players are in the Baseball Hall of Fame, in 1944 the Browns played the St. Louis Cardinals in "Trolley Series," and during its life the time had a one-arm outfielder.
