MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – St. Mary’s CU was cleared Tuesday to build a new branch at the old Friendly’s Ice Cream location in Westborough.

The Friendly's was closed earlier this year when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The $600 million credit union has three branches in Marlborough and since 2005 it has added branches in Hudson and Northborough. The credit union plans to open the new branch next July.
It is the second Friendly’s site in Westborough to be turned into a bank branch, following a similar effort by Berkshire Bank.
