Syracuse Figure Charged In CU Check Fraud

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A suspect was indicted yesterday on charges he stole thousands of dollars from multiple victims in a bad-check scam that hit at least two local credit unions.

Christopher Vanetten, 37, is charged with stealing more than $3,000 from Syracuse Postal FCU, then issuing eight checks that were refused by USAA Federal Savings Bank in Clay last June and July.

He also is accused of writing at least a dozen checks that were refused by Compass CU, including a $1,000 check to BJ’s Wholesale Club.
