Major Banks Emphasize Online Demonstrations

NEW YORK- Bill payment services are being emphasized in online demos of retail banking services by banks, according to a new report. The analysis by Corporate Insight found that of the 14 firms profiled in the report offer distinct tours focused on this service alone.

"These demos generally offer specific details regarding how a bill pay transaction can be executed in addition to basic information regarding its availability," the analysis suggests. "The same level of interest was not allocated to other functions."

"In conducting our research, we were surprised that a number of financial institutions seemed to gloss over the multitude of services available in their customer service sections of their online demos," said Erica Bensousson, Senior Analyst, Bank Monitor at Corporate Insight. "More attention was given to bill payment than any other service."

The center listed lost or stolen laptops, unprotected backup tapes lost in transport, and hackers as the reason for some of the breaches.

But it also reported that one in five victims of data theft say the perpetrator was someone they knew personally. (c) 2005 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc. All Rights Reserved. http://www.cujournal.com http://www.sourcemedia.com
