Teller Stole $29,000 To Cover Husband’s Medical Expenses

MADISON, Wis. – A former teller at Bull’s Eye CU was sentenced to a day in jail and fined $1,000 for stealing $29,200 from the credit union she needed to pay her husband’s medical expenses.

In sentencing Elizabeth Simonis, 29, the judge factored in Simonis’ lack of prior convictions and her husband’s severe medical issues, who said she understood the extreme pressure Simonis was under when the family’s medical bill outstripped their income.

Simonis’ husband has a panic anxiety disorder that results in hospitalization every few months and requires Simonis to talk him through his daily attacks, frequently take him to medical treatments and keep him on his medications. The out-of-pocket medical expense triggered Simonis to take money, her lawyer told the judge.
