TEXARKANA, Texas – Credit union executives and volunteers are mourning Tuesday’s death of Joe Thornton, longtime president of Texas FCU and a former CUNA Board member, at 76.

Thornton also served on the boards of Southwest Corporate FCU and NASCUS, and served six years on the Texas CU Commission, which oversees the state’s CU Division.
Thornton was a certified audit manager at Tenneco Inc., where he also volunteered as assistant treasurer, and a director of Tenneco FCU in Houston.
Thornton was CEO of Teachers CU (now Texar) in Texarkana for 18 years and also had been a director of credit union-owned Town North Bank.
