Theismann Urges CUs To Keep Building Momentum

WASHINGTON - Former Washington Redskins Quarterback Joe Theismann urged credit unions to continue building momentum when they visit their lawmakers during the Hike The Hill effort that is part of CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference.

"Momentum is not something we can touch, it's something we feel," Theismann told the crowd. "Get in front of your legislators and tell them, 'here we are, listen to us...' It can be the one person in the room that sits down with the one person on the Hill and get their ear and their mind."

Known as much for his (relatively) small stature as for having won multiple Super Bowls (indeed, at one point, Theimann held up his Super Bowl-beringed fingers and said, "let's reflect..." to an appreciative crowd), Theismann said he could relate to credit unions and CUNA's new "Little Guy" lobbying tool.

"I haven't been the biggest or the most talented, but I will fight you 'til the end," he said. "That's how you win."

The former football star also likened credit unions to the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, noting how it wasn't until later in the season that the team showed signs of going all the way.

Mention of the Colts less than a month after the team's Superbowl victory drew cheers from Indianapolis fans, leading Theismann to congratulate them, but also briefly commiserating with the Chicago Bear fans in the crowd.

"Momentum has been such an important factor in my life," he said. "It's up to you to build it." (c) 2007 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc. All Rights Reserved. http://www.cujournal.com http://www.sourcemedia.com
