WESTPORT, Conn. — Eight solar panels sit atop the roof of Tri-Town Teachers FCU that power a new electric vehicle charging station in the credit union's parking lot.
John Coniglio, assistant manager, said the $17 million-asset institution is hoping the addition drives more interest in the credit union and electric vehicle loans, as well as lets the community know that Tri-Town Teachers is eco-friendly.
"Most important, we want members and people within our town to know we are doing even more for the community," said Coniglio.
EV charging stations are beginning to appear in this city, but Coniglio said the credit union's charging station is the only one located in the downtown shopping and dining district.
"The credit union is located in the corner of a municipal parking lot," said Coniglio. "So it is the perfect place for people who are heading downtown."
The station accommodates two vehicles at a time and has both 240-volt and 110-volt charging. Tri-Town partnered with a local car dealership to cover the costs of the EV station.
Last year, The National Institutes of Health Federal Credit Union launched a pilot program that allows NIH commuters who own electric vehicles to charge their cars while at work. In addition, Anheuser-Busch Employees' CU installed a dual Level II charging station in preparation for the continued rollout of electric vehicles in its area.
