NILES, Mich. – Two men from Elkhart, Ind., this week were indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with a Jan. 18 hold up at Berrien Teachers CU, when a third accomplice was shot by a security guard.
Glenn Porter, 22, who was hit trying to escape, and Travis Curry, 21, where charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and brandishing and discharging firearms in connection with the robbery that ended unsuccessfully after the guard confronted them.
One of the alleged robbers, 22-year-old Devarence Kimbrough, was shot twice during the getaway and died later after his accomplices dropped him off at nearby Memorial Hospital.
The three drove up to the credit union in a stolen car around 10:20 that morning. Porter and Kimbrough entered the credit union, while Curry waited in the car, according to police.
During the ensuing shootout, Porter was hit in the buttocks and Kimbrough was hit in the chest and upper body as he exchanged gunfire with the guard.
Porter was captured on March 10 and Curry was arrested on June 17.
