ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – United FCU, which is poised to become one of the first credit unions to acquire a bank, on Monday said it plans to build a new headquarters and add up to 500 jobs by 2020.
The $1.3-billion credit union has formally issued a request for proposals to communities in the region. It is looking for approximately 20 acres to accommodate a new office building and parking. It hopes to complete the expansion in the next two years.
Founded in 1949 at Whirlpool Corp., the credit union has agreed to acquire troubled Griffith Savings Bank, an $88-million thrift in nearby Griffith, Ind. The deal is awaiting approval by bank and credit union regulators.
