After the Indianapolis-based Mobile Mexican Consulate registered more than 700 Mexicans here for Matricula identification cards, Universal 1 Credit Union said it has begun accepting the cards as ID.
"As a credit union, it's important to remember our core philosophy of people helping people, and we accept the Matricula card as a means of identification to open a savings account for a safe place to keep their money," said Sandra De Le?n, business development specialist at Universal 1. "Some Latinos have no concept of the accounts and services that credit unions offer and can end up paying high fees and finance charges from other sources."
De Leon is a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens, treasurer of the Latino Connection, a network of organizations and individuals focused on helping the Latino community, and on the board of the Greater Dayton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
