BOSTON - State regulators said they have approved the expansion of University CU from employees of a dozen area credit unions to include as many as 100,000 students at those schools.
The $43-million credit union was chartered to serve employees at Boston University and recently expanded to serve employees at the nearby schools of Boston College, Tufts, Bentley, Berkeley College of Music, Fisher, Lesley, Suffolk, Newberry and several others.
Under the amended charter it can now serve students at colleges in the Boston-area counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Middleses and Essex–but not alumni.
The inclusion of students follows similar trends at college credit unions across Boston’s Charles River at Harvard and MIT, which also expanded from employees to students in recent years.(c) 2008 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc.
