Up To 1 Million Petitions May Be Presented At GAC

Momentum continues to grow for what is expected to be a major gesture during CUNA's government affairs conference later this month-that is a nationwide petition drive urging Congress to protect the credit union tax exemption.

The California CU League said last week that 402 credit unions in California and Nevada had collected more than 190,000 signatures from members urging both Congress and the state legislatures to protect the tax exemption.

As many as 40 state leagues are participating in the petition drive, and credit union leaders will present the petitions to their congressional representatives during their annual lobbying pilgrimage at CUNA's GAC.

While the numbers may be impressive-look for well over one-million names from all the leagues-it's difficult to gauge how effective the petitions will be on lawmakers, who are regularly inundated with such initiatives.
