Salt Lake City, Utah-based Mountain America Credit Union was caught in the middle of a botched robbery-turned-murder that occurred a few miles from their Cottonwood Heights branch.
On the morning of May 27, construction crews found the body of Mauricio Martinez, 31, outside of the $5.4 billion CU's branch. The situation has been ruled as an ongoing homicide by Salt Lake City Police, who say the body was placed there after a robbery attempt failed "several miles away."
Det. Greg Wilking of the SLCPD said police believe there is no connection between the alleged homicide and the 581,000-member CU, noting it is likely the credit union's property was chosen at random due to it having, "some level of concealment."
Two men have been identified as suspects in the crime, Marco Garcia, 26, and Jorge Castanon, 34, both listed as citizens of Mexico according to local news reports. A third suspect, Jamie Clarissa George, 34, is currently wanted for questioning in relation to the homicide. A police report stated that Garcia and Castanon admitted to arranging to rob Martinez, but that during the setup Martinez was shot and killed.
Mountain America officials were unavailable for comment.
