Wescom Selected To Provide CU Services To Mitsubishi

Wescom Credit Union received an early Christmas present one week before Thanksgiving. The $2.5-billion credit union that serves 200,000 members was selected by Mitsubishi Motors North America to provide credit union services for employees at the carmaker's Cypress, Calif., headquarters.

Max Sucee, spokesman for Wescom, told The Credit Union Journal Mitsubishi has 1,800 employees at that location. "The first day we had an ATM installed in the cafeteria and sent a business development officer to the headquarters, we signed up 27 new accounts," he said.

According to Sucee, Mitsubishi previously did not have a formal agreement with any CU. "A few months ago, the company brought in a new HR team. Tina Covington, our business development officer, introduced herself to the new team. She originated the idea and saw it through from start to finish," he said.

Wescom's marketing plan for its new sponsor company includes regular on-site visits by Covington. "So people can pick her brain and get ideas about how the credit union can help them," Sucee said.

In addition, both of Wescom's monthly newsletters-one for sponsor groups and the other for members-will be posted on Mitsubishi's intranet. "We will be working to continually enlighten Mitsubishi's employees and let them know what we can do for them," he said.

Mitsubishi employees who choose to join the credit union will be able to take advantage of a new Wescom program, Sucee said. The credit union is offering new member benefits to employees at all of its sponsor companies. New members can get one or all of the following: 1,000 Wescom credit card rewards points, a pre-approved overdraft line of credit for $250, a $50 cash bonus on an auto refinance loan, $150 off the processing fee for a first mortgage, or free checks.
