SANTA ROSA, Calif. — For one hour, things looked a little dark for Redwood Credit Union.
Not to worry, the $1.8-billion CU just turned off all non-essential lighting at each of its 15 branches and administrative offices on March 28 in recognition of Earth Hour. The event took place at 8 p.m. Pacific time, explained EVP and CFO Wade Painter, who reminded that all data center, security, and ATM services continued uninterrupted.
"A local middle school approached us about participating in the event," Painter explained. "Since we are already a supporter of sustainability and the environment, this was a natural fit. If it's important to the community, it's important to us."
In 2008, Redwood CU received LEED certification for its administrative offices. RCU has also been recognized for its sustainable practices and social responsibility by the California Credit Union League, the Business Environmental Alliance, and the city of Santa Rosa, the credit union reported.
