MADISON, Wis.-CUES has named Daniel McGowan, SVP with Pioneer West Virginia FCU as winner of its Exceptional Leader award. McGowan will be honored at CUES' CEO/Executive Team Network on Nov. 4 in Manalapan, Fla.

League Wins Silver Quill Award

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.- The California and Nevada Credit Union League has won a 2012 International Association of Business Communicators Pacific Plains Region Silver Quill Award for its 2011 annual meeting and convention marketing campaign.

Minnesota CUs Are Recognized

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Minnesota Credit Union Network has named as the winners of its 2012 Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and Desjardins awards in their respective categories. Winners of the Dora Maxwell Awards were Minnesota Valley FCU, Greater Minnesota CU, City & County CU and Hiway FCU. Winners of the Louise Herring awards were Star Choice CU, First Alliance CU and TopLine FCU. Winners of Desjardins awards were United Ecuators CU, Topline FCU and Greater Minnesota CU.

CUSO Wins Breakthrough Award

EUGENE, Ore.--SELCO Community CU's CUSO, SELCO Investment & Retirement Services (SIRS), has been named a winner of CUSO Financial Services' 2011 Breakthrough Award and 2011 Bronze Keystone Award. The awards recognize growth in investment program revenues, including 140% growth in 2011 over 2010.

Two Elected to ACUM Award

MANCHESTER, N.H.--Two people have been elected to terms on the board of America's Credit Union Museum Foundation: Diana Dykstra, CEO of the California/Nevada CU League, and Dennis Pierce, CEO of CommunityAmerica CU in Missouri. Re-elected were Dick Ensweiler of the Texas league and Michael Ray of Congressional FCU.

ORLANDO, Fla.-Mark Zickefoose, a board member with Insight Credit Union, was dining at Gator's Dockside restaurant in Orlando when President Obama made a surprise visit and spent time talking to Zickefoose and his family, above.

MACU Members Save $7M In Interest

WEST JORDAN, Utah -Mountain America CU is reporting that its members have saved nearly $7-million in interest payments as the result of a refinancing campaign it staged from April through July. One couple saved $60,000 in interest.

ICUL Awards $28K In SCUD Grants

NAPERVILLE, Ill.-The Illinois CU Foundation has awarded $28,750 in Small CU Development (SCUD), Community Service, and Marketing and Business Development grants, bringing the total awarded for the year to more than $74,300.

Niagara's Choice? Merge Into NCFCU

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - Niagara's Choice FCU has agreed to merge into it Niagara County's FCU to create a $125-million credit union serving 23,000 members. The deal will give $80-million Niagara's Choice FCU two additional branches.

UTFCU Members Reach $1M Goal

TINTON FALLS, N.J.-United Teletech Financial CU reported it has met its $1 million Community Challenge goal for saving members money in interest expenses. The campaign launched at the beginning of summer and promoted two difference loans: the TimeShifter Mortgage and the Cut the Card personal loan. A percentage of what each individual saves in interest expense is being donated by UTFCU to local charities.

CFO's Changing Role Is Examined

MADISON, Wis.-The CUNA CFO Council has published a new white paper, "The Transforming Role of the Credit Union CFO," which charts the quiet evolution of the position. The CFO's role has morphed into a more complicated and demanding role befitting a financial services environment that has also become increasingly multifaceted. The paper said the position now requires a "move beyond the analytics; people want to know what the numbers mean and how they relate to their daily work.
