Wine Auction Raises $160,000
PORTLAND, Ore.-The 12 Annual Credit Unions for Kids Wine Auction here raised $160,000 for the charity. Held at the Governor Hotel, some 179 people from 15 Northwest credit unions were in attendance.
Too Many Terms for 'Senior'
WASHINGTON-The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on has released a report detailing what it says are problems with so-called "senior designation" credentials used by financial institutions and advisors, saying it has found more than 50 different terms in use. The report, "Senior Designations for Financial Advisors: Reducing Consumer Confusion and Risks," said the designations can confuse older consumers, who are already at risk for deception and fraud, and offers several recommendations. Crosswell Named 'Palmetto Protege'
COLUMBIA, S.C.-Will Crosswell, a business development specialist at Palmetto First FCU, has been named "Palmetto Protégé" and will now serve for one year as statewide spokesperson for young adults and the opportunities credit unions provide them. Avalos To New Region V Position
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Milagro "Millie" Avalos has been named Associate Regional Director-Program for NCUA's Region IV office in Austin, Texas. After 13 years in CUs, Avalos joined NCUA in 1999.
May Honored With Vamper Award
NEW YORK-The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions has named Harriet May, former CEO of Government Employees Credit Union in El Paso, Texas, as the 2013 recipient of its highest honor, the Annie Vamper "Helping Hands" Award. "Harriet embodies the spirit of the Annie Vamper award, having dedicated her career to serving low-income individuals and families in her own community. She continues this work on a national level sharing her mission, vision and know-how with credit unions all over the country," said Federation President and CEO, Cathie Mahon.
HR Council Names Exec Committee
MADISON, Wis.-The CUNA HR Council has elected its executive committee. Elected were: Chair, Suzanne Oliver of Mountain America FCU; Vice chair, Robert Davis of VyStar CU, and secretary/treasurer, Cindy Swigert of United FCU. Re-elected to the exec committee was Robert Carmichael of Maine Savings FCU, while newly elected were Lisa Baron of Baxter CU and Linda Steger of NRL FCU.
More CUs Name New CEOs
LONGWOOD, Fla.-Credit unions continue to name new CEOs. Among the most recent, Dan Kelley has been named CEO of Seminole Schools FCU. Kelly was most recently with FAIRWINDS CU. In Portland, Mich., EVP Harvey Hoskins has been named as the new CEO of $240-million Portland FCU, succeeding Gary May, who retired after 24 years. In Springfield, Mo., Steve Pierson said he will retire as CEO of the $148-million BlueCurrent CU on June 30. Pierson, only the second president in the CU's 84-year history, will be succeeded by EVP Craig Tabor. In Seattle, CEO Bill Hayes said he will retire at year-end from $396-million Verity CU. And in Madawaska, Maine, Norstate FCU has promoted EVP Susan Whitehead to CEO, replacing David Rossignol, who is retiring July 1. In La Habra, Calif., the $510-million American First CU has named Jon Shigematsu as its new CEO. Shigematsu was previously CFO.
After 41 years at Garfield Heights, Ohio-based Emerald Group CU, CEO John Martin is retiring June 30 from the $50-million credit union. Operations Manager Wendy Driver has been named to succeed Martin when he retires to his new role as part-time VP-business development. Martin joined EGCU in 1972 as its part-time treasurer/manager when it had just two employees, 280 members and $250,000 in assets.
Illinois Awards SCUD Grants
NAPERVILLE, Ill.-The Illinois CU Foundation has awarded $51,885 in Small Credit Union Development (SCUD), Community Service, and Marketing and Business Development grants. The SCUD grants were awarded to 12 CUs and one chapter; the Community Service grants went to seven CUs, and the Marketing and Business Development grants went to four CUs.
