Int'l CUs Get Update On U.S. Economy

MADISON, Wis.-Requests from outside the U.S. by credit unions wanting more information on how economis issues are affecting American CUs led the World Council of Credit Unions to host a webinar to address the issue. The 90-minute presentation was led by CUNA Senior Economist Steve Rick and was made available to WOCCU's G7 members in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean, Ireland, Poland and the U.S. Rick told his audience that conservative lending practices, favorable rates and a liquidity base primarily comprised of member deposits have well positioned U.S. credit unions to weather what economists are now calling a pending recession. "The U.S. economy has a global reach, and problems we may be having here definitely impact the financial well-being of our members in other countries," said WOCCU CEO Pete Crear.

Freiburg To Keynote At CUNA Lending Council

ORLANDO-Author and speaker Kevin Freiburg will keynote the 14th annual CUNA Lending Council Conference here with remarks on leadership. The meeting is set for Nov. 2-5 and will also include discussion of a wide range of lending issues. Attendees may also volunteer at Give Kids The World Village in Kissimmee, Fla., a not-for-profit resort for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Risk-Management Meeting Set For Northwest

BEAVERTON, Ore.-The first ever CU Security Risk Management Conference-Northwest will be held here Nov. 6. The meeting is aimed at CU execs charged with IT security, risk management and compliance. it is being hosted by Clint Kaiser, president of Security All Stars. Kaiswer was formerly with First Tech Crdit Union and has been working with small and medium-size CUs.

McLean To Receive Future Leader Award

MADISON, Wis.-CUES has named Deborah R. McLean, VP-marketing and business Ddvelopment with Carolina Postal CU in Charlotte, N.C., as the recipient of its 2008 Future Leader award. McLean was recognized in part for the creation of its Priority Payday Checking program, which gives CPCU members access to their paychecks as soon as they are posted in the ACH warehouse, and has generated an increase of $1 million in core deposits. The award will be presented during the CUES CEO Network Nov. 2-5 in Las Vegas.

Tampa-Area CUs To Host First-Ever 'Expo'

TAMPA, Fla.-Credit unions in this market plan to host a Credit Union Expo aimed at helping consumers "discover the difference" offered by CUs and have invited the public to the free event at the USF Sundome here. Hosted by the Tampa Chapter of the Florida league, approximately a dozen area credit unions are involved. The Oct. 18 event will include financial seminars, a cash prize drawing, CU CEOs answering questions, and a keynote address by former Tampa Bay Lightning Captain Dave Andreychuck.
