CU Unveils New Name, Logo

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-HealthAmerica Credit Union has changed its name to Healthcare's Cooperative Credit Union.

The new name was chosen to better reflect the cooperative mission and structure of the CU. The CU was established in January 1954 as Blue Cross Blue Shield Employees Credit Union until 1982 when American hospital and healthcare employees were added to the field of membership.

Ky. Court To Review FOM Case

FRANKFORT, Ky.-Kentucky's Supreme Court has agreed to review a credit union FOM case related to state regulators' authority to grant expansions based on the state's Area Development Districts (ADD). The case was originally filed by Home Federal Savings & Loan against the Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) in 2006, with the bankers arguing an ADD is the equivalent of a "community," and that state law does not permit community FOMs for state charters. Credit unions lost a 2008 decision at the appeals court level.

The court's decision revives CU hope in the case after a blow on the appeals court level last November. Six CUs have been named in the suit: Members Choice, C&O United, Service One, Beacon Community, GTKY CU and Members Choice.

CUES Experience Cancelled

MADISON, Wis.-Another indication of a struggling economy's effect on credit unions: CUES has cancelled its "CUES Experience: Immersion Learning for Marketing Technology & Operations Leaders" conference scheduled for April 14-17 in Denver. "Currently credit unions are facing one of the most challenging times in our history," said CUES CEO Fred Johnson, noting many CUs are having to cut travel expenses. CUES said it will look to provide equivalent content through "other means," and will recognize its Golden Mirror marketing awards winners, typically recognized at the conference, through other channels.
