Fryzel Supports 'Systemic Risk Council' Idea

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA Chairman Michael Fryzel issued a statement last week indicating general support for the concept of a "Systemic Risk Council," a proposal given new life by FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair who mentioned it in recent congressional testimony. The council's form and members have yet to be formally proposed, but the general idea is to coordinate discussion among regulators of risk scenarios."While I continue to recommend the preservation of the current regulatory structure, where NCUA and other entities retain their supervisory and insurance functions, I also see significant policy benefit to a council responsible for broad standard setting as well as monitoring of implementation of prudential guidelines," Fryzel said.
