Southeast Corporate FCU's Birdwell To Retire

TALLAHASEE, Fla.-Southeast Corporate FCU announced that William Birdwell, its president and CEO since 2001, will retire in February, when he turns 65.

Birdwell has had executive positions with several corporates over a 30-year career, including chief operating officer for WesCorp FCU, president of Volunteer Corporate FCU and assistant manager at Southwest Corporate FCU, before going to Southeast.

House Recognizes 75th Anniversary Of FCU Act

WASHINGTON-The U.S. House of Representatives issued Resolution 556 last week, recognizing the 75th anniversary of the Federal Credit Union Act, passed in 1934. The resolution was offered by Reps. im Himes, Rick Larson, and Paul Kanjorski. "The House resolution is a fitting reminder that America's state and federally chartered credit unions have a long and proud history of helping their members improve their financial well being, especially in hard economic times whether during the Great Depression or in today's recessionary environment," said CUNA President Dan Mica in a statement.

Fiberglas FCU Gives Office To Labor Union

NEWARK, Ohio-Fiberglass FCU has donated its former office on John Street to the IBEW, a labor union of Owens Corning. The credit union opened a new facility this year and a new office inside the Owens Corning plant last year, allowing it to retire the 30-year-old John Street facility.

Statement Inserts Address Economic Situation

WASHINGTON-NAFCU has introduced three new statement inserts to help credit unions address the current economic situation with their membership.

The inserts cover three areas: "How The Economic Stimulus Package Can Benefit You," "Your Credit Union Remains Strong & Well-Capitalized" and "Should You Refinance?" All of NAFCU's inserts are available in an electronic format, which includes text for a website or newsletter and a Web graphic that can be customized.

SECU Purchases Historic CU Site For Branch

RALEIGH, N.C.-State Employees' Credit Union (SECU) is purchasing land for a new branch building at the historic Lowe's Grove Rural Credit Union site in Durham, N.C. SECU chose this location for its rich history and significance to the credit union movement-a move that will bring SECU back to the original credit union roots in North Carolina. Lowe's Grove Rural Credit Union, which opened for business on Jan. 20, 1916, was the first rural credit union in the South.

Navy Fed Gets $1M Grant For Call Center

PENSACOLA, Fla.-Officials with Escambia County have approved a $1-million grant for Navy FCU to help the credit union giant expand its call center here. The $40-billion credit union plans an $81-million expansion which it says will create 800 jobs and only gets the money if the jobs come through. Navy Fed is getting similar financial incentives from the state of Florida in exchange for delivering the new jobs. The new facility is scheduled to be complete in 2011.
