Regulators Warn Of Scams
OLYMPIA, Wash.–Two states’ regulators urged credit unions last week to warn their members about scammers using economic woes to coerce them into bad investments. Regulators in Washington state and Ohio noted that those nearing retirement are especially vulnerable to promises of high return. "Investment scam perpetrators stay current on economic news in order to seem more legitimate and believable to their victims,” said Washington DFI Director Scott Jarvis.
Local CUs Active At Super Bowl
PHOENIX–With the Super Bowl in town last week, a number of local credit unions had promotional tie-ins. A pair of tickets to the game was donated to a local radio station by Arizona State Credit Union and auctioned off as a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network. ASCU donated the ticket package to 92.3 KTAR as part of a “Super Bid for Super Kids” promo. Meanwhile, Desert Schools FCU was the presenting sponsor for the “2008 Snoop Bowl,” held at a local high school. Rapper, record producer, and actor Snoop Dogg helped organize the game, which featured youth football players from Snoop’s League in Southern California vs. a group of similarly sized/aged kids from Phoenix. Proceeds from the went to the Matt Leinart Foundation. Desert Schools also donated tickets to the game.
Young CU Employee Dies In Fire
MONESSEN, Penn.–A memorial service was held last week for Sasha Zuro, 26, a member service rep at Valley 1st Community FCU, who died in a fire. Zuro had been with the credit union for five years, and was killed along with a friend in the condominium fire at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort.
Dawson Named To Council
VIENNA, Va.–Navy FCU CEO Cutler Dawson has been named to the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. Chaired by Charles Schwab, the Council is charged with advising the White House and Treasury on efforts to boost financial literacy nationwide, including recommendations to better educate people from all walks of life about financial matters.
