October Is National Co-Op Month

WASHINGTON-October is National Co-op Month. Overseen by the National Cooperative Business Association, the theme for Co-op Month 2010 is "Local. Trusted. Serving You." Credit unions will mark International Credit Union Week Oct. 17-23. There are more than 29,000 co-ops in the U.S.

 

Study: Michiganders Prefer Their Credit Unions

LANSING, Mich.-A statewide survey here found that, relative to bank customers, more than twice as many CU members have an outstanding relationship with their financial institution. The study, from Harris Interactive and commissioned by the Michigan league, found 76% of members are "absolutely confident" their institution is the best place for their financial needs, while 31% of bank customers felt the same way. "In the first half of 2010, some 15,000 Michiganders joined credit unions. The study also found that 76% of members believe their CU operates with their best interests in mind, vs. 21% of bank customers.

 

Wirz, Others To Be Honored By Calif./Nev Leagues

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.-The California and Nevada CU Leagues have announced the names of those who will be honored at the annual meeting later this year. Honorees are: Distinguished Service Awards to Fairview EFCU CEO Chris Coursen and Redwood CU CEO Brett Martinez; Outstanding Volunteer Award to California Bear CU volunteer Sherman Grancel; Tomorrow's Star Awards to CalCom FCU's Jay Lee and Inland Empire CU's COO Dhara Sanchez, and the Leo H. Shapiro Lifetime Achievement Award to Henry Wirz, CEO of SAFE CU.

 

Triple Rewards Offered To New Members Of 1st United

PLEASANTON, Calif.-1st United Services CU is offering the "Hacienda Triple Rewards Program for workers at companies in the Hacienda Business Park. Those who open a qualifying deposit receive a $25 "thank you" deposit in their account, while another $25 is donated to Hacienda Helping Hands to provide healthcare and education related programs.

 

Tiny Table Rock FCU Merges With Service 1 FCU

SHELL KNOB, Mo.-The $1-million Table Rock FCU in Shell Knob, Mo., has been absorbed via merger by $735-million Service 1 FCU in Muskegon, Mich., which has a branch in Neosho, Mo. TRFCU was founded in 2004. In Jackson, Miss., Hope Credit Union is absorbing via merger East Central FCU. Hope CU was founded in 1995. The merger will create a $200-million CU.

 

$5K To Be Awarded To One Attendee Of Discovery

MADISON, Wis.-CUNA Mutual Group said it will offer someone the opportunity win $5,000 as part of its upcoming Online Discovery Conference, to be held Nov. 3. The winner will be determined using a points system, with points to be awarded for how fully attendees participate in the conference's amenities, including chat rooms, webinars, exhibit hall booth visits, and documents viewed, to name a few.
