NAFCU Names CUs, Execs of Year

ARLINGTON, Va.-NAFCU has named six individuals and two CUs as winners in its 2011 Annual Awards Competition. The winners are: FCU of the Year, Pinellas FCU in Largo, Fla., in the asset size category of less than $150 million, and Tinker FCU in Oklahoma City, Okla. CEO of the Year: Lynette Smith, Washington Gas Light FCU in Springfield, Va. (less than $150 million), and Gail DeBoer, SAC FCU in Bellevue, Neb. Professional of the Year: Dan McGowan, Pioneer West Virginia FCU in Charleston (less than $150 million), and David Tuyo, Pen Air FCU in Pensacola, Fla. Volunteer of the Year: Ralph Bicker, Pasadena FCU in Pasadena, Calif. (less than $150 million), and Curtis Collins, JSC FCU in Houston. The winners will be honored at NAFCU's 44th Annual Conference in San Francisco, June 28 - July 2.

 

TDECU Buys Real Esate Agency

LAKE JACKSON, Texas-The $1.6-billion Texas Dow Employees CU has acquired local Birdsong Real Estate, and said it will now offer full real estate services through its new agency, TDECU Real Estate, LLC.

 

Bienz Named CEO At Partners 1st

FT. WAYNE, Ind.-Partners 1st FCU has named Carla C. Bienz as its new president/CEO. Bienz had previously been EVP, and has been with the $230-million CU for more than 30 years.

 

CUES Launches Next Top CU Exec

MADISON, Wis.-CUES has launched the 2011 "Next Top Credit Union Exec" for employees under age 35 who apply by creating a 60-second video about themselves and a project they are working on or planning, or an idea they have for their credit union. Six regional finalists will receive airfare, accommodation and registration to CUES' CEO/Executive Team Network, Nov. 6-9 in Las Vegas where they will give their final presentations. The winner receives airfare, accommodation and registration for any two of CUES' CEO Institutes, a prize package valued at $20,000.

17 Discovery Sessions At ACUC

MADISON, Wis.-CUNA and CUNA Mutual said they will collaborate to present 17 CUNA Mutual Discovery breakout sessions during CUNA's America's Credit Union Conference & Expo, June 19-22 in San Antonio.

 

NY CUs Document Outreach

ALBANY, N.Y.-The Credit Union Association of New York has released its 2010 More (Member Outreach and Reinvestment Endeavor) Report, which includes more than 900 entries from 80 CUs on efforts in their respective communities. Among the overall outreach efforts: 60% of NY CUs offer customized products for youth; NY CUs presented financial ed programs to 65,000 young people and 45,000 adults; NY CUs donated nearly $3 million to community organizations.

 

Int'l DEs To Be Recognized

MADISON, Wis.-World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), in partnership with six Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) programs, said it will recognize the third class of International DE (I-CUDE) designees at WOCCU's 2011 World Credit Union Conference July 24-27 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Catalyst Corp. Closer To Reality

DULUTH, Ga.--Georgia Corporate and Southwest Bridge Corporate have presented their merger application packet to the NCUA's Office of Corporate Credit Unions. If approved, the merger will go into effect Aug. 1 and will form Catalyst Corporate FCU.

 

Nuss Retires, Pearce New CEO

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa-Larry Nuss, president/CEO of Cedar Falls Community Credit Union since 1979, has retired. During his tenure Nuss oversaw growth to $83-million from $1.9 million. Cedar Falls Community CU has named Helen Pearce to succeed Nuss. Pearce has been with the CU since 1983, most recently as executive vice president.

 

SECU Members Save $7.9M In Fees

RALEIGH, N.C.--State Employees' CU reported that during the recent tax season it helped nearly 53,000 members claim more than $82 million in refunds while saving them roughly $7.9 million in fees. The work was done through participation in the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
