PORTLAND, Ore. – An elderly robber who served 12 years in prison for a series of 1990s bank heists was sentenced Tuesday to 17 more years behind bars for a recent string of robberies that culminated in a December 2008 hold up at Redwood CU in San Rafael, Calif.

Alan Hurwitz, 69, known as the "Zombie Bandit" for his mumbling and blank demeanor, robbed banks to support a drug habit, according to authorities. In the 1990s, Hurwitz, who used to work for the Michigan Board of Education, served federal time for a series of bank heists in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana.
Hurwitz was arrested in Wyoming last January while he was on the run from authorities after the credit union heist.
