FreeStar Financial CU, Clinton Township, Mich., awarded a Samsung tablet to Katelyn Badour, age 10, in a random drawing from 4,300 entries of those who contributed to an iSave CD in 2016. The iSave CD program encourages youth up to 17 years of age to save regularly.

'Rebuilding Together'

In San Antonio, Security Service FCU’s Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 to Rebuilding Together San Antonio, $3,000 to the Weber/Davis affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, and $4,800 to The Good Samaritan House in downtown Salt Lake City. Separately, the CU held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new branch in Harlingen, Texas.

Charity drive

Polish & Slavic FCU, Brooklyn, N.Y., held its annual “Holiday Children’s Smile” charity drive, collecting $133,204 for three children’s hospices in Poland and for sick Polish-American children in metropolitan New York and Chicago. In three years the drive has raised nearly $400,000.

Student branch opens

Siskiyou Central CU, Yreka, Calif., held a ribbon-cutting for its new Miner branch at Yreka High School. The branch is located in the YHS office and is run by students, giving them a chance to develop financial responsibility and job skills.

eCO Credit Union, Birmingham, Ala., partnered with the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce to host an open house and ribbon-cutting for its new Shelby County location. The Alabaster, Ala., branch is a full-service location, offering lobby and drive-thru service.

Hospital grant

State Employees’ CU’s member-funded SECU Foundation awarded a $2 million challenge grant to SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals. The grant supports expansion of a new wing that will nearly double the capacity of the Chapel Hill-based hospitality house from 40 to 75 rooms.

In Raleigh, N.C., Coastal FCU’s Foundation won the Dora Maxwell Award for social responsibility for its Power of Sharing event. The Power of Sharing Gala recognized the incredible work and impact non-profit organizations have on local communities.

Maine Credit Unions marked a successful Campaign for Ending Hunger. The record-breaking total was $674,193.48, which will purchase more than 2.7 million meals for hungry people.

FORUM CU, Indianapolis, returned more than $1.5 million to members in 2016, including savings and prize-based rewards. Raymond B. won a grand prize of $5,000 after he opened a Weekly 5 Club Account that gives chances to win prizes for making regular deposits. Separately, the CU placed 56 on Training magazine’s 2017 Training Top 125 report.
